Ecto is a kit for children to use for play. The materials, along with time and space, will allow children to engage in true play. True play is deep and uninterrupted engagement in an activity of one’s own choice. It is beautiful and it is rich, and it is necessary in childhood. It is how children make sense of the world.
The name ecto was chosen for its short, double syllable sound, and because it had a similar cadence to 'lego.' Ecto is derived from the word 'ectoderm,' which is the cell line that becomes the nervous system in a developing embryo.
Children need play, and being a nanny, I see that many children are not reaching flow state during play because adults are always interrupting. Hopefully a resource like this can help change the way we see and support play in childhood.
